Nothing to Declare

COLLABORATIONS & CCA Andratx is pleased to present Nothing to Declare, a solo exhibition by Tokyo-based artist Erline, developed during her residency at CCA Andratx in April 2026. The exhibition presents a new body of hand-built ceramic bags, created in direct response to the artist’s time on the island.

The title of the exhibition centers on the metaphor of an internal customs checkpoint — that high-stakes threshold where we decide what is worth revealing, and what must remain hidden. Here, the “contraband” is not illegal goods, but the inventory of a mind: the impulses, attachments, and sensory memories gathered during a period of residency in a foreign place. The ceramic bags are physically present, weighty and undeniably real, yet they carry something that has no “market value” to an outsider — the personal, the fragmentary, the not-fully-translatable.

Erline’s practice moves across ceramics, painting, and installation, but returns again and again to a single vessel: the bag. Hand-built and adorned with chain, imitation pearl, and charm, her bags sit somewhere between ornament and burden — objects that promise to hold what we carry, while quietly asking what that carrying costs us. Drawing on the visual language of fashion and consumer culture, she treats femininity itself as something worn and performed, a set of accessories assembled daily and displayed for others to read.

In Nothing to Declare, that language is turned toward something less legible: the residue of a residency, an island, a stretch of unfamiliar time. What does an artist bring home from a place like this — and what, in the end, is simply too specific, too private, to pass through customs?

ERLINE is a Tokyo-based multidisciplinary artist working across ceramics, painting, and installation. Her practice centers on hand-built ceramic bags and other whimsical yet weighty objects that merge craft with cultural critique, exploring femininity as both performance and survival strategy. She has exhibited internationally in Tokyo, Copenhagen, Sydney, and New York, including in the 2025 Benefit Show of The Here and There Collective, New York.
