Nina Molloy

Nina Molloy was born in Bangkok, Thailand in 1999 and lives and works in New York. She grew up between Bangkok and the UK, drawing on both her Thai and British heritage in her practice. Molloy works from photographic and printed materials — often domestic textiles such as curtains and bed sheets — translating them through repeated acts of transformation: photograph to print, textile to painting. Her muted palette and layered, impressionistic brushwork speak to the way memory fades and representation stays unstable. Her paintings have also drawn on the vernacular architecture of Thai spirit houses, small devotional structures she enlarges into monumental history paintings that hold the personal and the mythological together. Her work has been shown at venues including Friends Indeed (San Francisco and Los Angeles), Kunsthal n, and the Cantor Arts Center at Stanford University.

In her own words, she paints places and things she wants to see with real clarity — spaces she can step into and inhabit with her body once they’ve taken form on the canvas. In that process, new things emerge that remind her she is composing the world she sees, and that being moved by that world changes how she goes on seeing it.
